L'HEURE BLEUE (2012-2013)

”L’heure bleue” is a serie of photographs composed of 8 portraits of young adolescents, aged between 12 and 15. They are photographed in the style of the Dutch Golden Age masters.

Being half Dutch from my father side, I grew up admiring the paintings of the great masters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt. Their luminosity in their paintings always fascinated me. They give an effect of something very soft and mysterious. I used this light in order to create on the young girls’ faces an ambiguity about their age. I have been for some time intrigued by the evolution of adolescents in today’s society, which places a lot of emphasis on sexuality. They live in a world where it is often difficult for them to find their place, no longer children but not yet women. The light, chosen to paint portrait of mature women, gives them an enigmatic expression and creates a certain troubling ”woman-child” image. This work is to a great extend autobiographic. These girls’ faces have become the ”base” on which I could mold my own expression, a quizzical expression which seeks to destabilize and to create an uneasiness with the spectator.

The expression ”L’heure Bleue” in French refers to twilight when day has not yet become night, childhood that has not yet become adulthood.
